I'm surprised you're having so much trouble, too! I don't know a whole lot about it, but I think most hard drives can be read by current Windows & Mac OS's
With the iPod as a hard-drive option, that may work if you use the iPod to store the music as "data" rather than as "songs" (don't add them through iTunes). Otherwise it will only let you synch with one computer.
How much music do you have? You may want to get a really big thumb drive. They come in handy from time to time anyway.
I hope this is at least of some help. Let us know what happens.

Did you read this post? http://www.kadavy.net/blog/posts/transfer-itunes-library/
If I understand you correctly, you whiped your hard drive entirely, except for the music itself. In which case, you probably destroyed any information about play counts or ratings. Otherwise, if you have an intact iTunes Library (your iTunes knows where all of your music is and is displaying your song ratings and play counts) you should be fine with instructions from that post above.

Hi cap,
I'm not sure if I am understanding your post, but it should go like this (after exporting your *Library* from your desktop:
- correct the filepaths in your XML document so they point to your music on your laptop. You may be able to use "find/change" from a text editing document to do this. (more on that in the post you referenced)
- set "preferences > advanced" to "“Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library.” This is under “Advanced.”"
- Chose File > Import, and select your edited XML document.
Does that make sense?
